By the time of his death, in 1902, De Beers controlled 90% of the world's tough-diamond manufacturing and distribution, and below Rhodes' successor, Ernest Oppenheimer, De Beers went on to have a monopoly over the diamond commerce which lasted until the early Nineties, until it was rivalled by giant producers in Russia and Canada.
